After 2 hassle free flights and a taxi ride (where the driver apparently had underestimated the size of the bicycle boxes and we had to trust that a flown-in colleague would not be driving somewhere completely else with the most precious possession of my 2 still somewhat suspicious companions) we arrived in the fishing town of Negombo. This is where most tourists start and end their journey in Sri Lanka, which allows you to eat sushi here (which we did not) or enjoy a local meal under luminous skippy balls and accompanied by a live saxophonist playing Beatles songs, ending with a complimentary and very tickling foot massage by doctor fish (which we unabashedly did).

Maarten claims his new aerodynamic
haircut improves his average cycling speed by 0.23 km/h. Here we were
enjoying our first curry by the way

In terms of cycling, it takes some getting used to riding on the left (which not everyone takes very seriously however) and the heat (with my measurements tapping 40.3 degrees). Soon we were back in our familiar routine with the alarm clock set around 6 a.m. in order to get somewhere with air conditioning before it gets really hot. Along the way there is much to see! From an amazing amount of miniature nativity scenes to lots of waving children in immaculate white school uniforms. Furthermore, I have seen more species of birds in recent days than in the rest of my not exactly short life combined! We have now arrived in Anuradhapura, which is apparently quite famous for its photogenic ruins. I will of course provide a photographic report in the foreseeable future!
